While he definitely didn’t help Orbán, I wouldn’t give him this much credit. News have been crazy over here last week, including stories, like 3 whistleblowers confirming that the intelligence agency was used to try to secure the victory by leaking data from the then opposition (now victorious) party. To me (as a Hungarian) that’s a far bigger story than the pathetic dipshit flying over.
Honest question: Was this intentional?
Was this the goal of his visit?
Orbán was trying to get Trump to come here and do an endorsment speech for him. There were talks about it. Having the POTUS, the “leader of the free world” here just to endorse Orbán I think (or at leats they did) could have boosted his chances. Especially as Orbán likes to present himself as one of the major players. The big boy on the playground, who is friends with all the biggest ones.
But of course Trump was too lazy to fly all the way here. So he decided to send the next best thing. And when they realized they actually have no next best thing, he sent JD.
But Vance is actually not that well known here. I think 95% of potential Orbán-voters could not place or recognise him. So even though VPOTUS sounds good in theory, it really did not matter that he was here in any way.
I appreciate the context! What is your perspective on Magyar being a former Orban loyalist? Did he truly part ways, or was this to ensure the next russian sock puppet gets in for a long time?
What comes to mind is JD Vance himself once equated Trump to Hitler but then pivoted so rapidly as to he his biggest advocate.
His goal was to fuck couches and chew bubblegum, but he was all out of bubblegum …
