Glad they’re taking off the gloves a little, but it’s always been a non-option to just make our lives significantly and irrevocably better like M4A or the PRO act and although they’re good at trying and failing, they never talk about the consequences as dire as they actually are with few exceptions.
First-past-the-post is a dichotomous system!
I also hate it and I also wish that that were not the case, but we simply do not have the critical mass of educated citizens required to change that system right now. Instead of whinging about the way things ought to be, we need to deal with reality the way it actually is, so that we can make intelligent choices about how to advocate for change long-term.
For instance, in the general election, in 2024, we had two effective national choices. Nationally, there were two realistic outcomes. Protest voting and not voting and voting for third parties would not, and did not, create a third outcome.
I agree with you that we should have other choices, but the reality of our situation is that, today, we do not have the numbers to will that third choice into being overnight. Getting there will require long-term strategic work, perhaps decades of work, to build a better foundation.
In the meantime, harm-reduction matters. Without any doubt, Democrats are central to our problems; but imagine our world today with a Harris Administration to fight against right now instead of a Trump Administration. Imagine a 5/4 Garland court instead of a 6/3 Roberts court. Of course a Harris/Garland timeline would still be full of deep and urgent problems. But the Trump/ Roberts world that we do have is absolutely worse on every issue by every measure.
