Not all of it, only a part of it. MD Anderson Cancer Research Center is and has always been a part of Private Sector Research.

The Office of Research Administration (ORA) is the central office responsible for the support of activities related to research, including internal funding, private industry funding, material transfer agreement and endowed awards. ORA also provides research infrastructure oversight as it relates to offsite freezer storage, research glassware and media facilities.

ORA serves as the authorized signing official for MD Anderson for execution of private industry and material transfer agreements. Through the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP), ORA supports the application and administration of pre-award federal funding and external funding, including the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). ORA also manages several internal endowed awards that recognize the achievements of MD Anderson faculty and researchers. The endowments which support these awards were established through the generosity of philanthropic donors, including several MD Anderson Board of Visitors members.

Last year it generated 12.8 Billion dollars in revenues.

Yunhai Li, 35, was originally detained at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston in on July 9 after federal agents found medical records on his laptop during an inspection ahead of his flight to China, according to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.

Now Houston prosecutors have charged the researcher with theft of trade secrets, which is a third-degree felony, and tampering with a government record, a misdemeanor. He could also face federal charges in the future.

Since 2022, the MD Anderson Cancer Center had employed Li where he was working on a vaccine to prevent breast cancer from spreading, the New York Post reported.

Li reportedly was working on a scholar exchange visa from the U.S. Department of State. The National Institutes of Health and the Defense Department was funding the research.

Yeah, Breast cancer sucks, but the Chinese Government is a much bigger existential threat and their spies should be properly made example of.

Because the Chinese Government get a big fat paycheck out of it and they use that paycheck to fucking destroy people’s lives, put people in labor camps, topple governments, monetize every facet of everyone’s lives, and push their own authoritarian regime’s agenda.

Breast cancer does not only affect women, but I feel empathy for the Uighur women that China has been sterilizing and putting in slavery.

Dr Li, who had worked at MD Anderson Cancer Centre since 2022, had been part of a team developing a vaccine aimed at preventing the spread of breast cancer. Authorities said he resigned from his position on July 1 and then transferred the nearly completed research to a server in China. He now faces potential federal charges for attempting to smuggle protected research materials.

For context, MD Anderson is the largest cancer treatment center in the world,

“Houston is proudly home to some of the most groundbreaking medical institutions in the world - publicly funded centers that are saving lives each day thanks to their innovative research,” District Attorney Sean Terre said in a statement.

You miss the crux of this despite quoting it yourself

The MDACC is publicly funded. They take money from our taxes.

Why would a “non-profit” be so concerned with keeping medical research data private? Unless they, perhaps, are planning to sell to a for-profit pharmaceutical company. This isn’t my analysis, it’s truth; this is how it works.

The argument you are laying out is the “national competitive edge”—ignoring the harm that this exact strategy has already caused—again, these are real events that represent a recurring pattern:

      • Covid mRNA research was funded in part by public grants; despite this, research was not shared as a public good leaving huge swaths of the Global South without timely access
      • The AIDS crisis was worse and decades longer in Asia and Africa than in the US, even while treatment existed, due to the privatization of medical data and the resulting monopoly abuse of treatment pricing
      • In 2025, similar patterns are playing out with cancer research, like from MDACC here. Except this time, the profiteering is done of the face of actual US citizens; the ones who paid for the research. In the US, novel cancer treatments can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, meaning that significant percentiles of sick taxpayers forgo treatment because the taxpayer research was sold to a private institution.

It is from these examples I feel it’s easy to conclude that publicly funded healthcare research should not be a trade secret. Any attempt to undermine that structure of abusing literally life-saving information for wealth sequestration gets a couple of cool points in my book.

Now people will have an actual cure instead of a $50 000 vitamin weekend at Johnny&Maggie’s Spa, and now Johnny and Maggie Foster’s donations for RFK Jr’s and Trump’s campaign is money flushed down the toilet instead of the beginning of a nation-wide wellness franchise.

Ultraracism is when a Chinese national is accused of stealing research after being caught stealing research?

When the project was approximately 70% finished, Li said he had taken up to 90 GB of research. When confronted by hospital officials, Li said he worked to convince them that he had permanently deleted the material while concealing it through a China-based cloud company.

Multiple U.S. entities, including the Department of Defense and the National Institute of Health, have federally funded Li’s research. As a condition of such work, documents show Li signed several forms acknowledging it was confidential, with strict rules around storage and sharing.

The forms also stated Li did not have relationships with foreign institutions overlapping his MD Anderson responsibilities and was not receiving outside financial compensation.

However, Li wrote that he retained his employment at a Chinese state-affiliated hospital while working at MD Anderson.

“When I accepted a post-doctoral position at MDACC in 2022, I retained my employment position at the First Affiliated Hospital. The First Affiliated Hospital continued to pay me a reduced salary through 2023 and has held my employment position there pending my return from the United States,” he wrote.

Charging documents state Li published research for the Chinese hospital while working at MD Anderson and received grant funding from the Chinese government.

On July 1, Li resigned from his position at MD Anderson. Days later, federal authorities stopped him at Bush Airport, reportedly in possession of the material.

Charging documents state Li told investigators he planned to permanently return to the state-affiliated hospital and use the purportedly stolen material for continued research.

Despite acknowledging that MD Anderson would likely publish the work in the near future, Li reportedly told investigators he felt it was “going to waste”

i think the problem is the focus on him being Chinese. the article frames it as evil asian person.

I’ll be honest, this is tricky. because we do need this things reported, and China ignoring IP laws (tbf, fuck those laws as well) needs to be publicly known. and those articles will end up generating a negative view of ethnically asian nationals.

IE, at which point it is reasonable journalism, and when does it become a tool to fabricate consent to remove right from minorities.
