Damn. I don’t watch anime but is this that widespread within the community? lol
i think its somewhat widespread in every community. people tend to make a bigger deal of it than it actually is though (see: this post). for example the underage relationships shown in anime are usually pretty mundane in nature, as no one in anime ever has sex – well outside of hentai… but that is hentai…
as no one in anime ever has sex
Seems you have been missing a couple of shows …
i guarantee i’ve probably seen way more shows than you as my MAL has over 700+ series watched. the amount of non-hentai shows where the characters actually fornicate, much less on screen, is probably in the single digits between all of those shows watched. I can’t actually think of a non-hentai show where the charcters actually do have sex on screen, aside from one – and that one is between two older high school characters, and you don’t actually see anything really objectionable.
if i actually think about it, i think the stuff i’ve seen in american tv and film is probably worse than that. I think the biggest problem people have with anime is that japense culture is unfamiliar and scary…
feel free to name some shows though.
Sexualizing a character doesn’t require onscreen fornication
doesn’t require much at all to you people, apparently. the wind blowing the wrong direction seems to draw ire.
Old stuff here:
Final episode of Onegai Teacher, the male student is shown having sex with the female teacher. It was a romcom otherwise.
Chobits, the MC had to finger the android to power it on.
i’m just going to point out that in the final episode of onegai teacher, you don’t actually see sex. you just see the teacher trying to seduce the student, but then the teacher disappears (no idea where she goes, but she’s just gone) and then a female student magically teleports in the room.
chobits, the main character is 19 years old.
you pointing out these scenes serves as a great example to what I’m talking about. People blowing shit way out of proportion so they can demonize anime as a whole.
it seems to me a lot of people are just uncomfortable with things from other cultures. they fail to recognize all the shit in their own media and give a fair comparison.
that said, my feelings are that people are far too sensitive, be it to foreign, or more familiar, western media. i think parents often try to baby children far more than they should and some people just like to be angry.
i guarantee i’ve probably seen way more shows than you as my MAL has over 700+ series watched.
So you missed more than just a couple of shows. But nice flex.
I can’t actually think of a non-hentai show where the charcters actually do have sex on screen
Redo of Healer, Higehiro and The Fruit of Grisaia have on screen sex.
And then there is implied sex even in tame shows like the middle aged online shopper and the jobless reincarnation iseakai.
And that’s just of the top if my head, having watched less than 200 animes.
we’re complaining about implied sex now… as if high school age kids don’t actually have sex… seriously get off the damn soap box. go outside. touch the grass.
I wasn’t complaining, just refuting your statement that no one in anime ever has sex.
I was going to point out that Rudy and Silvie were considered adults at the time, but I totally forgot about Eris.
But Eris is older than Rudy, I think. Though she’s his cousin …
I was pretty sure that one of the main harem girls was pregnant in S02, and was refering to that. But I might be wrong.
Eris was a little older than Rudy’s new body.
She is his second cousin, so not technically incest?
Your are right about s2.
I love how we can brag about being weebs nowadays. I was in them trenches back in the day. Trying to explain the difference between anime and cartoons to people. Getting weird looks for having a goku shirt.
we could always brag about being weebs – just pity the people who aren’t. their loss.
Does Inuyasha promote bad relationships? 🤔
I mean, Inuyasha himself is constantly hung up on his dead ex-girlfriend, and his dead ex-girlfriend still hates Inuyasha for killing her, even though he didn’t and she fucking knows it was actually Naraku.
Meanwhile his current maybe girlfriend is only like 16 and he at least a hundred years old.
I thought about this a lot the other day.
Its “justification” is in that era girls go married off even younger than that.
That monk dude has to turn away a girl who’s… 14(?) after she asked him to take her with him and that she’d bear his children.
Personally, in that setting I think it’s fine as long as they are not like fanservice to the viewer and its actually plot relevant. The monk asking her originally is more for humor as it was clearly shown as ridiculous and when it was more “legal” he took it more seriously and shot it down. That kind of humor is definitely a product of its era (wasn’t the age of consent in Japan like 12 until less than a few decades ago?)
Also regarding Kagome, this anime was written by a woman and one of the main demographics is schoolgirls who want their heart to flutter by imagining themselves in a pseudo-isekai. Not saying it makes it right but it personally doesn’t bother me because I get why stories like that exist coughTwilightcough
EDIT: The constitution set it to 13. But most prefectures up-ed it to 16 in recent decades apparently
This plot summary is not exactly encouraging me to get into it.

how is unhealthy relationship even defined? would a mutually beneficial but occasionally abusive relationship be considered “unhealthy”?
Anime doesn’t sexualise underage people, because until the 2023 age of consent in Japan was 13. It’s 16 now, so for American prudes it’s still underage. Just don’t forget that in most of the world the age of consent is much much lower than in the US.
And if anything, this meme is a cultural appropriation as the American view is being pushed on another culture. If you don’t want to learn about and accept foreign culture - watch Marvell movies instead.
Right, because episodes dedicated to a teenage girl’s underwear and chest don’t sexualize them, of course. (/s)
I’ve lived in Japan and seen middle aged men take analog photos of the short-skirt madoka murals in Akihabara. It’s sexualizing children and it’s creepy. And don’t get me started on the figurines. EVEN IN MANY anime it’s depicted as creepy.
They are not children, that’s the thing.
Age of consent =/= “They are not children”.
My brother in Christ, what
Look, if you’re having to bring up age of consent laws, you’re arguing the wrong side.
13, hell even 17 is WAY too young for age of consent. Anyone arguing otherwise because of “culture” is asking for the abuse of minors.
Why the hell is 17 “WAY” too young? What would be your ideal age of consent? 30?
Don’t know, but it’s not 13 lmao
So you can’t even argue your own point. Why make such a claim then? And even your point about it “not being 13” is debatable. I hope you are at least aware of Romeo and Juliet laws? Works just fine for most of Europe and Central/South America, where it’s usually 14 to 15.
Ahaha! Oh my… American prudes and their perverted views…
You’re really weird, dude. This is a really weird thing to argue about.
Yeah, there’s nothing to argue about - most of the world has a lower age of consent than murican prudes.
Starts reading: oh yeah this is gonna be a funi comment about how fucked up the world is
Continues reading: turns out its just some fucked up rant about how “different cultures” justify horrible acts
If you’re a prude then yes. If you’re a normal human - no.
Age of consent nationally was 13, but most prefectures had raised the age to at least 18 many, many years earlier. Specifically, most of the local prefecture laws outlawed sexual acts that were judged to be indecent between adolescents (those under 18) and adults. 46 of the 47 prefectures had adopted local laws to outlaw this behavior by the end of the 1980s. The last one (Nagano Prefecture) adopted laws to outlaw this behavior in 2016.
For reference, this array of local laws is referred to as Seishōnen Hogo Ikusei Jōrei, which can be translated to “Bylaws for Protecting and Nurturing Adolescents”.
Delicious in Dungeon! I think!
Asobi Asobase
Usually find random comedy pretty miss, but for some reason, their jokes landed for me. Whoever did the VA for pigtail girl really put her soul in that character.
But you’d also be lying if you said it didn’t have what OP was complaining about
My brother saw Colorful and thought that was all anime lol
In what sense? I haven’t seen that one.
Colorful is basically softcore hentai. No real plot just a series of ecchi vignettes.
Can’t remember the name. Hero wakes up to find himself in a strange city where the skyscrapers are connected by rope bridges and guarded by strange, masked killers. First couple of episodes get me hooked. Then they bring in a teenage girl and suddenly there are just so many panty shots…
“High-Rise Invasion
edit = thanks to user jaschen for doing the research.
Hunter Hunter
Would Friren count? Romance of the two teens are age appropriate for them. And two dudes that are enamoured with older women, but I think that’s it.
I agree with the sentiment that loli shit is disgusting, but the problem is that so many of you sexless prudes go in looking for shit to be offended by and start projecting onto shit that’s fine. Like the character Kusano in Sekirei is fully gross, a disgusting pedo-bait character that simply should not exist in the story, period. That shit should absolutely be rallied against.
But then y’all bring up shit like Momo from MHA like it’s the same thing. It’s fucking not, at all. A post or near post-adolescent character wearing titillating attire in much the same way that comparable real life pop stars do is just not even remotely on the same level as actual children being depicted as sexual viable partners, especially in the context of a story like MHA where the protag is a literal high schooler expressing romantic interest in his age-appropriate peers.
And “glorifying unhealthy relationships” is fine enough critique I suppose but one that hardly applies solely, or even primarily, to manga and anime.
thank you!
And “glorifying unhealthy relationships” is fine enough critique I suppose but one that hardly applies solely, or even primarily, to manga and anime.
Almost every rom-com I can think of.
Half the drama in all romance, not just rom-coms, would be entirely avoided if relevant characters were engaging in healthy adult communication. Anime is far from the worst offender in the unhealthy relationships regard.
So true. I’d even go so far as to say that healthy relationships are rarely displayed in fiction full stop, because they’re usually not interesting. Typically they’re limited to side characters in a healthy relationship who are meant to be the “straight man” for the main character to be eccentric around.

Exact reasons I hate anime. It’s just so creepy. There are a few notable exceptions, of course, but I think it’s safe bet that 95% of anime is just awful.
