Both Trump and his “border czar,” Tom Homan, have said California officials could face arrest if they’re perceived as impeding ICE operations.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom pushed back against threats of arrest by Trump administration officials, remaining defiant as he oversees clashes between law enforcement agents and protesters in response to immigration raids across Los Angeles while also managing an ongoing power struggle with the federal government.

In an interview for MSNBC with NBC News’ Jacob Soboroff, Newsom called Homan’s bluff, urging him to “just get it over with” and move ahead with the arrest.

“He’s a tough guy. Why doesn’t he do that? He knows where to find me,” Newsom said. “That kind of bloviating is exhausting. So, Tom, arrest me. Let’s go."

      Hi, actual leftist here.

Is Newsom a garbage person, a slimy politician with no real core beliefs, who just tight rope walks a balance between the desires of his constituents, and his wealthy donors?

      Yes.

Can garbage people actually do the right thing from time to time, be on the right side of an issue?

      Also yes.

Keep it up Newsom, maybe this will be a genuinely radicalizing experience for him.

        Yes

Got any good news articles about this? I don’t see much about him except his podcast and headlines like these. But nothing ever dives into who he actually is and some might call him a “garbage person”.

He’s been a proponent of a lot of right-wing talking points and stupid policies that run against what most left-leaning people in California want. Most recently he endorsed a bill that would require an absolutely criminally obtuse asset-check to get disability insurance in the wealthiest state in America, a state which is wealthier than most countries.

He doesn’t support trans athletes, he has worked to end homeless encampments without providing them an option, he’s been anti-union and snuggles with people like Charlie Kirk.

That’s just what I know for myself without looking up sources, just what I remember as I have followed Cali news.

But all that said, yes, as /u/sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com said, you can support someone when they are fighting for what you believe in, and despite my knowledge that Newsom is a giant snake, he’s doing and saying the right things here and I support it.

A lot of people who aren’t terminally online would be shocked at just how divisive this issue is among leftists, but I am quite sure that’s just because leftists/progressives are so deprived of being able to have intellectual debates, since you can’t have intellectual arguments with the right, that they’re forced to infight just to exercise mental capacity to some degree.

For an appetizer, read up on how during COVID lockdowns he was still out dining at Michelin restaurants. For your main course, learn about how much money he has personally invested in the corrupt “public” utility PG&E. Then for dessert listen to the Behind the Bastards podcast about how truly heinous and evil Dr. Mehmet Oz is, and ask yourself why anybody would ever give that sentient snail a platform of legitimacy.

Hopefully these comments are the ones that will make it clear just how hard the “Democrats bad” narrative is being pushed on Lemmy.

They want us to focus more on the Dems than the people actually implementing fascism. They want to manipulate the next election, and they’re starting early. It will get worse.

It’s much more effective to fracture a group by pretending to be part of it than by leveling criticism from the outside.

          It’s an iteration on r/thedonald.

Just like there, some of it is genuine. And more of it is genuine because it’s easy and fits in with the “consensus”.

Luckily the mod/admin powers here aren’t being used to assist it, unlike previous times.

        “Democrats bad narrative”

Idk, the actions of the governor of the state where national guard and potentially military are being mobilized against Americans exercising their first amendment rights, seems kind of relevant to the whole thing.

Good point. The protestors do that and more and they have a fraction of the power Newsom has. It’s pathetic.

“Comfortable, wealthy neoliberal who does interviews with and works with fascists and is not personally targeted by them bravely says some macho stuff while his state’s residents get disappeared and shot at.” Is the actual headline here, but Gavin is hoping that a little grandstanding will let him make a presidential run later without actually doing anything for his constituents. He should be doing so, so much more than he is and yet so many people seem desperate for a win that they are willing to call this a victory rather than like, a potential signal that he might, potentially, care about his citizens a little, hypothetically.
