Problem is that they were not always wrong. Napoleon and Hitler are the most recent examples, but in history there are dozens more. Their western front was just too accessible in pre-modern times, impossible to defend 100%.

I think you’re missing some essential point of basic economics if you think this problem doesn’t affect communist societies. I specifically mean the problem of demographic imbalance, not the problem of “infinite growth” which communism does at least try to solve, and free-market capitalism doesn’t actually view as a problem really.

Russians themselves were willing (or were ordered instead of asked) to go die in WW2 against Nazi Germany. Was this a “sheer hatred of germans” that was due to “germanphobic propaganda”? Perhaps a bit, but there cleary was a worthy cause behind it all.

If it meant an end to the fascist regime of Russia, it’d be worth it. We all die anyway at some point, why not die for a good cause then.
