The logic is, “He was killed for his speech, and this is being used to justify his assassination.”, which is 100% true. Being hateful has nothing to do with it. It’s not, nor has it ever been illegal to be a white supremacists. And the laws and protections apply to them just as much.
If you think the killing was justified, then you have lost faith in varying degrees the system can change things non violently. And you might be correct.

Ranking free speech above tolerance is what causes this. He didn’t tolerate others, he actively argued that people, including children, should die for various terrible reasons. He broke the social contract. He was no longer entitled to tolerance or protection from being killed. You lose that protection the second you say someone else should be killed because of who they were born as.
This free speech supremacy nonsense is garbage. White supremacists should not be tolerated in civil society. People who advocate for others to die (based on who they were born) deserve people advocating for and pursuing their death. The guy justified school shootings by saying a few gun deaths are a worthwhile cost for gun rights. People are quoting him saying that to point out that it’s pretty hypocritical to get upset when Mr. “School shootings are acceptable actually” gets shot at a school.
If pointing out that hypocrisy is hate speech, then the original quote is absolutely hate speech.

Racism/white nationalism is out on full display in the world. While there are plenty of hateful sacks of shit so stupid that they see people with different skin color and assume they’re bad and dangerous, there are also far, far more who are just going along with the flow and trends and don’t want to be punished by the system, by daddy turnip, by his administration, or by the other people who are also going along with it and jumping onto the bandwagon out of laziness and apathy.
This is how social attitudes are changed rapidly, it’s happened over and over in history. It just takes a handful of people normalizing something that most people would reject for entire empires to be toppled and for stable systems to be torn down.
If we were all broadly more aware of how fragile everything is and how much power we really have as groups, I like to think we would have a different world. I doubt we’ll see it though.
