Something is wrong with this article. It seems strangely obsessed with Thunberg smiling at some point (mentioned several times in the article, with a well-timed shot that makes her appear to smile at a soldier handing her a bun). It acknowledges that the boat was seized “near Egypt”, but was it in international or Egyptian waters? Surely that would have been an important detail that any real journalist would like to include? It uncritically cites propaganda points handed out by Israeli officials:

    • the journey was a publicity stunt (“selfie yacht”), not a protest
    • equating the protest as a whole to Greta Thunberg as a person. I had previously mentioned how I enjoyed that the organization did not boast about her participation.
    • Thunberg was more concerned about her ego than about handing some “meagre” aid to Gazans. Yet the aid was confiscated.
    • and the classic: supporting Palestinians means siding with Hamas terrorists.

I had to downvote OP because they could’ve chosen a better source I’m sure.

The Telegraph is a far-right British tabloid.

Of course they’re propagandizing for the Fascist White Colonialism project committing Genocide.

Yeah it used to be their (UK) project initially. And while I’m hazy on the specifics, they supported it in ways that weren’t always kosher, to put it mildly.

This is an abduction, not arrest. It was in international waters. Countries need to start sanctioning israel

Indeed. The only real reason for a country to detain a boat on international waters is if it is suspected of piracy or slave transport. Or if the boat is legally posing as something it is not, such faking the flag they are sailing under.

instructed the IDF to show the passengers of the flotilla a video of the horrors of the October 7

This doesn’t remotely justify to do 1000x the same horrors over unrelated innocent people

Israel’s military has been ordered to show Greta Thunberg footage of Hamas’s Oct 7 2023 attack on southern Israel.

Just straight up showing a teenager extremely awful footage as a form of brainwashing and propaganda.

The message is obvious. “If somebody hurts you, then any revenge is permissible, even against people whose only sin is living near them. Even if children are starving to death, it’s okay if it’s revenge.”

The lack of humanity in Israel’s actions is simply hard to comprehend.

Well, have a look in the old Testament, specifically Leviticus 24:17-22.

19 If anyone injures his neighbor, as he has done it shall be done to him, 20 fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth; whatever injury he has given a person shall be given to him.

You know the part that is shared between Christianity and Judaism.

That’s “an eye for an eye,” which is already horrible, but is not an escalation. Israel is escalating, “a genocide for a single attack.”

And if you think about it, it makes NO sense, as humanity would have to destroy themselves too finally get even. Then there’s one person left, who won the game. Now it’s game over. So dumb.

At this point I wouldn’t be surprised the attack was staged by Israel to be able to take the rest of the Gaza strip.

You say that like it’s a bad thing. Yes, this is political activism. Cameras on Thunberg, ready to document in real time how crazy the Israeli government is.

Ther’s also the socio-emotional support for Palestinians. It’s not just about material aid (though that is extremely pressing today).

Well sure, they knew this was a likely outcome - because they know the Israel government is batshit. The purpose of the mission was aid and activism. They definitely knew that arrest was likely, but that’s not why the did it. They didn’t want to be detained. They just want to help the people of Gaza in whatever way is within their power. This is how they chose to do it.

It may not be perfect, but it’s definitely more effort and effect than doing nothing. And the more people who get on board with some actions, the more likely they are to succeed.

Their goal was to get attention, to force the media and public to start talking about it, to force western governments to pretend to care about it, ratchet up the international pressure by another notch. They have done everything they need to be successful at that. Now that they’ve been seized, it’s our jobs to do what we can to make the rest of that happen.

This is the sad part. It’s not the first and not the last time Israel has acted like this. Still, this protest is putting the media’s waning obsession with Thunberg to good use. 👍

The aid on the ship was symbolic. This was a protest action to call attention to Israel’s continued blockade of food and other aid into Gaza.
