People in red and purple states used their collective voting power to bring whatever is happening. You abandoned everyone by doing whatever you were doing when there was the time to do democratic choice, that was the time for righteous anger. Now it’s too late.

I’ve heard of people who like to absolve themselves from all responsibility because the existential threat they’re facing is hard actually.

I’m trying to understand this point. I’m in a purple state. By definition, that means that we’re on the cusp of being either democratic EC votes or republican EC votes, as well as senators, governors and other state-level offices.

One of the (minor, but still there) reasons I haven’t moved is because my vote actually matters here. If I moved to a solidly blue state, I would be removing a blue vote and making my current state more red.

One of my largest fears is that we continue sorting all the democratic voters into a small handful of blue states and lock in a permanent minority in government due to how we allocate EC votes and allot power in the Senate.

If anything, we need the people in deeply blue states to migrate out into other places and help push our country towards actual balance. If we took 2% of the 2024 democratic Californians (9m Kamala votes vs 6m Trump, 2% of the 9m is 180k, and we could easily do this several more times) and they moved to a low-population red state like Wyoming, Montana or North Dakota (spot checking 2024 vote counts), they would have no EC impact in California, but would have guaranteed Senate seats and EC votes. They would also have huge power in their new local and state government, since the total republican vote count majority was less than that tiny portion of California.

I know this is a simplistic way of looking at the numbers and not the humans, but blaming someone in a red/purple state for staying there is just not helping.

Americans, in general, are incredibly apathetic about the elections. I don’t have exact numbers at hand, but every research that I saw indicates that very little amount of people actually vote in every general election, and there was like a single digit percent of people who both remember that locals, primaries, and general exists.
I don’t blame progressives in red states for failing against the crushing machine of authoritarianism, in a theocratic regime it might be outright impossible to win. I’m blaming Americans, all of them but especially progressives, for throwing away the unique mechanisms of democracy they had in favour of dreaming of firebombing a wallmart or yelling at strangers on the intetnet.
Ever since I become interested in the American politics, I can’t get away from the stream of anti-election rhetoric, that seem to culminate in, well, this.
You all are at fault proportional to your share of power that you didn’t use.

As a description of the levels of power I personally have: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_boxes_of_liberty

I’m still at ballot box myself.

“Yelling at strangers [on the internet]” is the Soap Box, and while we’re pretty well past that as a country due to social media echo chambers and the like, it’s still useful. If there’s enough social pressure on a given topic, we can change policy. At the very least, being vocal (including online) lets other people know they are not alone.

I believe that we have effectively lost the jury box at this time. The supreme court seems to have abandoned rationality in a variety of cases to-date, and even in a best case, the judicial system works far too slowly compared to how fast new bullshit gets thrown at them by the current executive. Not to mention the cost to an individual average voter to try and sue would be prohibitive. Groups like SPLC and ACLU are helping here, but see point 2 (too slow).

I don’t need to defend myself, but I have voted in every municipal election I’ve been able to since my early twenties in 2004. About the only way I haven’t used my power here is by running myself, but I don’t think I’m qualified for public office and would only siphon money from someone better who might win.

That leaves us with the ammo box. For progressives in solidly blue states, whose votes were counted, but ultimately found irrelevant, this is the next step, hence firebombing tesla dealerships (Can’t find a recent walmart news article, but the idea is still there). In my purple state, I’m in my local precinct org and canvassing, but that doesn’t really help when the margin of victory for your party is like 20%.

I will acknowledge the point that Americans – in general – are apathetic. I have a significant amount of distaste for anyone who says they are ‘not political’ or who didn’t vote in 2024 or earlier. Sometimes though, you get a wake-up call after the fact. Anyone who didn’t vote or voted for trump in 2024, but is now pissed off has been awakened (dare I say, “woke”) and that should be celebrated, not derided. I love the leopards-eating-faces memes, but we really need to be reaching out to these people instead of mocking them. There is now a chink in their ignorance-armor.

You got a lot of anger in responses to your posts in this thread. The ‘in general’ phrase carries a lot of weight, but isn’t all that applicable here. This community is likely to be like me and very involved or at least informed. Phrases like “You are all at fault…” is going to raise hackles, even when clarified by ‘proportional to your share of power that you didn’t use.’

You really should be ashamed of yourself for slinging this bullshit talking point around. Do you even realize how politically, culturally and ethnically diverse the South is? Houston is already one of the most diverse and progressive cities in the country. People are out there fighting not just a Fascist Federal govt, but also a Fascist State govt. Do you see them running or crying online? What have you done? You cant even stand with your fellow countrymen because you are a coward through and through and want to draw lines on a map to make yourself feel better.

All the time, I watch one right now.

Houston is already one of the most diverse and progressive cities in the country

Tell me you’re from Texas without saying the word Texas.

        You cant even stand

I’m not from your dumpsterfire of a country, I’m one of those undesirables that you collectively voted to never let in. It was mostly you, the southerners, so diverse you keep voting for the worst rightest candidate ever since the 3/5th compromise. I guess I need to thank you for that, otherwise I would’ve been right there with you, doing jack shit to prevent fascist uprising.

You know, you talk a lot for someone who claims they aren’t even from here but still feels entitled to erase the struggle and sacrifice of millions based on maps and caricatures. Your entire worldview hinges on flattening a country with over 330 million people into two colors so you can feel superior from the sidelines. I hate to break it to you, but that’s not factual analysis: Its projecting intellectual laziness.

People here and especially in the south, DO fight. Every day. How do you think we survived Decades of Slavery, Desegregation & Jim Crow? People out here have been fighting for their rights and their grandchildren’s rights far before you were even conceived. Have you ever fought for your rights? Have you ever even gotten out off your high horse to do something for the good of others?

Also, if your going to invoke the 3/5th’s compromise as some kind of rhetorical jab, maybe read a history book first so you don’t look like such an arrogant dumbass. That compromise was literally forced on Anti-Slavery delegates by the same Southern Plantation Owners that armed and financed the Confederacy. It was a tool of White Supremacy, not some grassroots Southern vote. Seriously, what is wrong with you? You think its okay to blame the descendants of people who were counted as three-fifths of a person for the crimes of the ones who did the counting. This goes beyond ignorance. It’s fucking disgusting, plain and simple.

But maybe that’s the point. Your not here to fix anything, and you wouldn’t have done anything good for this country if you came anyways. Your here to jerk yourself off while people suffer all while you pretend to hold some level of understanding. Just say your here to troll and fuck off, dude.

That’s the point though. They have to cheat to win. This isn’t a legitimate government we are dealing with here anymore. It’s a Chinese style one party state.

What a fucking ignorant thing to say. Fuck you. Because I live in the same state as a bunch of bigots you’re saying I should suffer? “That was the time for righteous anger”? I’ve been righteously angry for over a fucking decade. Seriously. Fuck. You. Fuck you for saying this stupid, ignorant bullshit. Fuck you on behalf of every trans person born into a red state facing discrimination, harassment, assault, and murder. Fuck you on behalf of every queer person forced to go to conversion therapy because they’re born to conservative parents in a red state. Fuck you.

If only you could spend a portion of this emotions on fight or flight. But alas.
But hey, not throwing stones here, I myself was born in Russia of all places, and I also spent first half of my life thinking that being angry online and trying to convince fellow countrymen that fascism isn’t great actually will do something. You’re only learning what “collective guilt” means, I was born with it, molded by it.

Meanwhile, you ran away from your own country like a Coward and let Putin steal it from you. Your absolutely pathetic and nobody should be listening to you.

Pretty weak rebuttal bro. You have no points (let alone any values) to stand on and so you have to try to psychoanalyze me like some 13 year old kid on YouTube. Your so full of shit it’s hilarious. Your just a little bitch who ran from your own country when it got tough and now you want to laugh at people dying here because you didnt get your little handout. I have nothing more to say to evil scum like you. I am so glad you never made it into my country, because people like you are the reason why things got so bad in the first place. Good riddance and don’t come back.

Here in California we have more racist rednecks than several red states combined, they’re just outnumbered. State borders have nothing to do with where the actual split is, rural vs. urban.

        Hey, fuck them.
Don’t let others ideas of who is part of their in group and who can be excluded get to your empathy. I am glad you have it even if you don’t see it from anyone else today ( and hopefully I am wrong and you see lots). For every person you give comfort to today for being a good person in a bad place I thank you on their behalf even if they don’t.
