He was on like day 30 of a 90-day visa and was heading to his scheduled flight out of the country. Afaik, they had no reason to pick him up, they just like sitting around in the air conditioning to pick people up at airports and courthouses instead of chasing them across fields or something more exercise-y like that.

If he was on day 30 of 90 why was ICE saying he “overstayed”? Is this some kind of technicality not mentioned or is ICE straight up lying (as usual)?

Not an expert, but I think if you are ‘deported’ or leave after a deportation order, you may not return.

Regardless of whether or not the deportation order is legal, the fact that one now exists means he may not return to the U.S. At least not without an expensive legal fight.

        Basically - they banished him.

To me, it feels like some ICE thug trying to meet his quota while doing the minimum amount of work.

It’s kinda like Homer Simpson and the creepy shopkeeper:

“He ‘deported’ a guy for no valid reason, probably because it was easy and he’s a lazy amoral fuck who knows the fascists in charge are just looking at AI summaries and don’t really give a shit who gets deported or how”

        “That’s bad”

“But the guy was leaving anyway and avoided a deportation order that would cause him problems later, and ICE spending its time on this might’ve meant one less ‘real’ deportation instead”

        “That’s good”

“But the media coverage of deporting a famous person arbitrarily with impunity helps sow fear of the regime, which is what it wants”

        “That’s bad.”

Yeah. Part of Trump’s problem with deportation is that he is throwing away the law to get numbers up because the Biden administration deported a lot more people while adhering to the law.

Trump is trying to use immigration as a reason to set aside habeus corpus, but even then his administration is really bad at deportation.

See you’d make a good reporter. Those are the right questions.

Just not a good corporate news reporter. As we see.

No idea. He entered on an Italian passport (he has dual Italian-Senegalese citizenship, and they referred to him as “Seringe Khabane Lame, 25, a citizen of Italy” in a press release), so he should have up to 90 days in the US without a problem.
