  • Most assassinated politicians become lionized and turned into heroes, even if the reality did not convey that. For Shinzo, however, Japan basically collectively agreed that he was an asshole and his reputation was ruined. That rarely happens.

Imagine if the assassination attempt on Trump in 2024 was successful and then… not only does MAGA die immediately, but even the most die hard MAGA people immediately say ‘yeah Trump was a dipshit anyway.’

  • Hitler considered Italians to be racially inferior to even the French. Also there was little cooperation between the axis powers. They didn’t share much technology and or industrial power. Unlike the allies who were far more cooperative.

For example many people make a big deal about Hitler’s plan for nuclear weapons… but what no one talks about is Japan’s nuclear program… and how much closer they got to making a functioning nuke. There was very little information sharing between Japan and Germany, however.

In terms of industry, the Italian air force often had decent airframes but poor engines. The Germans had excellent engines but didn’t do much to help the Italians with their air force logistical issues.

Take this in comparison to the US which absolutely flooded its allies with everything from cutlery to explosives to fuel and everything in-between. The Soviet army was bolstered greatly by American trucks, jeeps, and heavy machinery that would have made winning the war incredibly difficult.

  • We are not talking Saudi Arabia. We are talking Iran.

But there is something I need to mention about Saudi Arabia and executing gay men. I did look at a list of executions for the charge of sodomy (which is what it is referred to as. Simply identifying as a gay man doesn’t appear to be an offense. They need to catch two men in the act for it to happen) is when those executions happen it was never just for sodomy, it was usually compounded by another (universally serious) offense such as rape of a child and/or murder.

So the gay men being executed weren’t just accused of fucking another man, but also of killing another person (quite possibly the same guy) or of raping a child.

Now am I missing some cases? Maybe. I dont spend that much time looking at Saudi Arabia’s prolific executions (they execute more people per capita than any other country), but most people executed in Saudi Arabia aren’t gays, they are drug smugglers.

I do not agree with the death penalty at all. So even executing drug smugglers is off-limits to me. Drugs should be legalized (or at least decriminalized) and strictly regulated, but no prison time for them, and certainly not an execution.

  • You want to know what is even weirder? Since you mentioned blackpowder firearms?

A flintlock musket, even an modern creation of an old design (such as the Brown Bess musket of the American Revolution) there are no regulations at all in Canada. No paperwork, no license, no registration, nothing. Even people with criminal records are not forbidden from owning them. A person with a history of domestic abuse, assault, and armed robbery can still get one legally.

But… flintlock pistols are (now were due to the freeze) treated exactly as modern pistols are. Meaning they need to be registered, locked up with trigger locks and carried in locked cases.

I find that preposterous. Even if flintlock pistols were freely available criminals would not bother using them. In several European countries (such as France) firearms DESIGNED prior to 1880 require no permit to buy or own. This means that cowboy movie lovers who own newly made colt SAA revolvers only need to register their guns but no permit needed to buy or own.

Despite this, there are next to no crimes in France committed with them. I should mention that many companies still make new revolvers of that kind, so it isn’t like they are using 19th century vintage makes.

    It is fucking stupid.

And also seeing the liberals (and I voted liberal last election) trying to make bill C2 is only making my blood boil.
